Training and Consultation

For those organizations or individuals exploring UAS technologies or are planning to operate UAS in the United States National Airspace System (NAS), we provide training and consulting services that will help Elevate Your Business – safely, effectively, and legally. Our faculty has extensive operational UAS experience and includes BOTH FAA certificated pilots and maintenance technicians – we are recognized aviation safety experts. UAViation has experience assisting organizations with developing UAS operational capability, which includes obtaining regulatory approvals, developing processes, procedures, and the appropriate documentation, personnel training, and technology acquisition – all anchored around a Safety Management System that ensures safe and efficient operations over the long term.

Our courses focus on the safe and responsible commercial operation of UAS in the national airspace system – introducing students to common UAS technologies and applications, operational considerations, and current regulatory approval processes and compliance.

Students are introduced to the theory of safety management systems (SMS) and throughout the courses learn how to apply SMS theory to unmanned aviation. These courses can be customized to provide more focus on a specific application based on the needs of a particular student group, i.e. construction, agriculture, search and rescue, etc.

Completion of the FAA Remote Pilot Ground School provides students the aeronautical knowledge required for an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate with a Small UAS Rating. The Introduction to Commercial Drone Operations course builds upon the Ground School course and provides students an indoctrination into commercial UAS operations – providing the skills and knowledge to operate safely and professionally. Finally, the Fundamentals of UAS Flight Operations utilizes applied learning principles and provides students a hands-on learning experience – planning, programming, and performing UAS flight exercises.

FAA Remote Pilot Ground School

This course will provide students the aeronautical knowledge required to obtain a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Remote Pilot Certificate with a Small UAS Rating.  Students are introduced to various aspects of unmanned aviation operations, which includes UAS system types and components, regulations and operational approvals, crew responsibilities, safety and risk management, human factors, and indoctrination to the civil and commercial applications of UAS. At the end of the course students will receive a Certificate of Completion. Instructors include FAA certificated Remote Pilots, Manned Pilots, Instructors, and Airframe and Powerplant Technicians with extensive experience in both manned and unmanned aviation.   

Introduction to Commercial Drone Operations

This course will provide an overview of unmanned aircraft system (UAS) commercial operations and the application of Safety Management System (SMS) principles to commercial operations. Students are introduced to various commercial UAS applications, associated technologies, and gain understanding of professional and safe UAS practices. Group laboratory exercises provide students practical application of this knowledge to various UAS operational scenarios, which includes utilizing SMS principles in assessing risks and developing appropriate mitigations. UAS applications covered include aerial imagery, construction, emergency response, and agriculture. Course instructors are FAA certificated Remote Pilots, Manned Pilots, Instructors, and Airframe and Powerplant Technicians with extensive commercial aviation experience.

Advanced Commercial Drone Flight Operations

Building upon the Ground School and the Commercial Drone Operations courses, this course utilizes applied learning principles and introduces students to hands-on commercial UAS operations.  Students will develop an appreciation of the procedures and protocols of safely operating a UAS by developing, planning, and conducting basic UAS operations – through the use of simulation labs and actual UAS flights (weather permitting).  Applications may include aerial imagery, construction, infrastructure inspection, search and rescue, and surveying.

Safety Management Systems for Commercial Drone Operations

SMS is the formal, top-down, organization-wide approach to managing safety risk and assuring the effectiveness of safety risk controls.  SMS is widely used across the aviation industry but its application to UAS operations is unique and maybe entirely new to organizations developing commercial UAS capabilities.  This course discusses the fundamental concepts of SMS and how these concepts apply to UAS operations.  Students will develop an understanding of the four SMS pillars – Safety Policy, Safety Risk Management, Safety Assurance, and Safety Promotion.  The course will provide students strategies for developing and implementing an SMS that supports their UAS operations.

UAViation is wholly owned and operated by PAL and Associates, LLC, a Missouri corporation. Headquarters are in St. Louis, Mo. The UAViation team members have terminating degrees and research experience in Aviation Science. The team also has extensive industry experience in both manned and unmanned aviation. This includes research, training, safety, operations, and regulatory compliance. It also includes obtaining regulatory approvals for various special situations.

UAViation has a formal Safety Management System (SMS) and is FAA-approved to commercially operate UAS under our FAA 333 exemption #14261. We are fully insured and our Certificate of Insurance (COI) is available upon request.
